At first Olympic marathon distance was not fixed. All that was important was that all athletes competed on the same course and it depended on route established for each venue.The first modern Olympics in 1896 had a marathon distance of 40 km. All over 800 annual marathons are conducted in most countries of the world. The prestigious races taken place in Boston, New York City, Chicago, London, and Berlin.
